ELGIN, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday at Judson University's Hoffer Field in Elgin, Ill. Despite a fine pitching performance by senior rightie Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), the Cougars dropped the first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest to Judson by a score of 3-0. However, SXU rebounded to take the nightcap in a 2-1 pitcher's duel behind a strong performance by sophomore lefthander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher).
The Eagles got to Miller, now 2-2 overall on the season, early in game one scoring two runs in the second inning and another in the third. Miller threw a complete game scattering seven hits, five of which came in the second and third frames. At the plate for the Cougars, sophomore third baseman Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) and senior centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) led the way with two hits apiece. For Judson, righthander Heath Groves twirled a complete game shutout scattering eight hits.
In the nightcap, the Cougars rode the hot pitching of Koehn to a 2-1 victory. Koehn's only run came in the Judson third when he hit a batter with the bases loaded. However, he came back to induce a 6-4-3 double-play and wiggled out of the jam. Koehn retired the final 10 hitters of the game on his way to a two-hit complete game. Junior shortstop John O'Brien's (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) two-out RBI double gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Junior catcher Ken Tezak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) also chipped in going 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Saint Xavier (11-8 overall/2-1 CCAC) will continue its 2009 campaign and CCAC play with a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, March 24, at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The Cougars return home to face Mount Mercy College (Iowa) on Thursday, March 26, for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
