CHICAGO - Despite posting four hits and four runs in the first inning of the day, the Saint Xavier University softball team managed just five hits and a run the rest of the way and split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Aquinas College (Mich.) Saturday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (10-11 overall) held on for a 4-3 victory in game one, but then dropped the second game, 5-1. Freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) had the big hit of the day for SXU with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning of game one.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first frame of the day highlighted by Hunter's big two-RBI hit. Sophomore Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) each recorded RBI singles in the first inning as well to help kick off the scoring. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) logged the victory on the mound for Saint Xavier throwing all seven innings and allowing seven hits, three runs (all earned) and two walks with four strikeouts. She improves to 6-4 overall on the season. Aquinas scored a run in the top of the fourth and two more runs in the sixth inning off a two-RBI single to complete its scoring in the game.
A pair of two-run homers by the Saints, one in each of the first two innings, put SXU behind 4-0 early in the day's second game. A RBI single by senior designated player Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) in the bottom of the fourth inning cut the deficit to three runs, 4-1. However, Aquinas added an insurance run in the top of the fifth off a RBI single to push its lead back up to four, 5-1. Freshman Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean) took the loss (1-3 overall) pitching the first two innings and giving up four hits, four earned runs and two walks. Freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) threw the remaining five innings and allowed seven hits, one earned run and no walks with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (10-11 overall) returns to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, March 24, with a road doubleheader against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The twinbill is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Michigan City, Ind.
