Jackson, Tenn. - Despite game-highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds by junior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team ended its impressive season with a heart-breaking 72-68 loss to No. 12 Oklahoma City University (Okla.) Friday morning in the second round of the 2009 NAIA Women's Basketball National Championships in Jackson, Tenn. The Cougars (26-5 overall) led nearly the entire second half, but turnovers and foul trouble hurt the team down the stretch and the Stars were able to hold a late lead in the final minute.
With 9:37 left in the game, SXU held a 54-45 advantage following a basket from Hannemann. Oklahoma City, led by junior center Holly Hardin with 20 points and senior guard Chelsea Ledbetter with 19 points, slowly started their comeback. Over the next three minutes of play, the Stars put together an 18-8 run to take a 63-62 lead with 4:54 left in the game. The Cougars managed to answer with a 6-0 run to regain a five-point lead, 68-63, with four minutes remaining on a three-pointer by junior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic). However, Oklahoma City held Saint Xavier scoreless over the final four minutes, while posting nine straight points during the same stretch to earn the victory.
The first half was played extremely close as a five point lead was all either team could build. The score was knotted, 33-33, at halftime. McCain scored 19 points for the Cougars, while sophomore point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) tallied nine points and team-best seven assists.View Game Stats
