CHICAGO - With a combined five fielding errors over the doubleheader, the Saint Xavier University softball team had to rally late to manage a split in its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and home opener against Judson University (Ill.) Thursday afternoon at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (9-10 overall/1-1 CCAC) dropped the first game, 3-1, with two errors leading to two unearned runs and then scored two runs in the final inning of the nightcap to pick up a 4-3 victory despite committing three errors in the field.

Sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) were the playmakers on offense for SXU Thursday. Murphy finished 4-for-7 on the day with a run scored and two RBI, while Hunter also went 4-for-7 with a run scored and a RBI. Freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) took the loss for Saint Xavier in Thursday's first game allowing five hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with four strikeouts over all seven innings. She falls to 3-4 overall this season. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) logged the win (5-4 overall) in game two giving up six hits, three runs (one earned) and a walk with six strikeouts.

All the scoring for the day's first game occurred in the third inning with Judson putting up three runs in the inning after the Cougars picked up two outs to start the frame. A RBI double plated the Eagles' first run before an error added two more runs to their score. Murphy recorded a RBI single in the bottom of the inning to make the score, 3-1, but that was all the scoring SXU could muster. A two-RBI double by senior third baseman Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College/Sandburg) gave Saint Xavier a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two. However, over the course of the next three innings, Judson scored three unanswered runs to take a 3-2 advantage into the seventh inning. A RBI on a fielder's choice by Murphy as well as a game-winning RBI single by Hunter in the final inning gave the Cougars their thrilling 4-3 victory.

Saint Xavier (9-10 overall/1-1 CCAC) returns to action on Saturday, March 20, with a non-conference home doubleheader against Aquinas College (Mich.). The twinbill is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at SXU Softball Field.
