Springfield, Mo. - Managing just seven hits and two runs on the day, the Saint Xavier University softball team dropped its final two games at the Show Me Games Saturday at Evangel University (Mo.) in Springfield, Mo. The Cougars (8-9 overall) dropped the first game to Benedictine College (Kan.), 2-1, and then fell, 4-1, to William Penn University (Iowa) in game two. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) took the losses for SXU despite solid outings on the mound Saturday.
Benedictine led early in game one scoring a run in the top of the first inning off a RBI double to left field. Sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) tied things up, 1-1, in the second inning when she crushed a solo shot over the wall in left-centerfield. However, a fielding error by Saint Xavier in the top of the fifth kept the inning alive and Benedictine took advantage with a RBI double to right field that proved to be the game-winner. Shearer kept the opposing bats in check most of the game allowing just four hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with eight strikeouts over all seven innings. She falls to 4-4 overall with the loss.
In the day's second game, William Penn scored a run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a late 3-0 lead. SXU finally answered in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Kennedy to cut the deficit to two runs, 3-1. However, the Statesmen got back-to-back doubles in the seventh to add an insurance run and took the game, 4-1. Brown threw all seven innings giving up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and a walk with five strikeouts. She now sits at 3-3 overall with the loss.
Saint Xavier (8-9 overall) opens its home and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Thursday, March 19, with a pair of games against Judson University (Ill.). The doubleheader is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at SXU Softball Field.
