CHICAGO - Junior running back Luke Schillo (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) finished with 44 rushing yards and two second-half touchdowns to help lead No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University over Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League foe Iowa Wesleyan College (Iowa), 27-3, in MSFA football action Saturday at SXU Stadium in Chicago. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-2 overall and sit in a tie with McKendree College (Ill.) atop the MSFA standings with a 5-1 mark, while the Tigers fall to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the league standings.

In addition to Schillo, several other SXU players had impressive individual performances in Saturday's victory. Senior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) went 26-for-37 in the game with 267 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Perryman also rushed three times for a team-high 47 yards. Senior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) led the Cougars receiving corps with seven catches for 104 yards, while junior wideout Andy Ricca (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City) also finished with seven grabs for 63 yards. Junior wide receiver Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had a nice outing for Saint Xavier as well with five catches for 48 yards and a touchdown in addition to his six rushes for 31 yards.

Iowa Wesleyan was first to get points on the scoreboard Saturday. The Tigers took their opening drive 47 yards down the field in eight plays to set up a 21-yard field goal by freshman kicker Scott Knipfer with 10:42 remaining in the first quarter. SXU tied the game, 3-3, on its ensuing possession when sophomore kicker Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) split the uprights with 5:17 to play in the quarter. Longest then connected on a 43-yard field goal on Saint Xavier's next possession with 1:25 left in the first frame to take a 6-3 advantage.

The SXU offense tacked on a touchdown 10 minutes before halftime when Perryman connected with Gerritsen on a 26-yard pass to the right corner of the endzone to build the SXU lead to 10, 13-3, at the half. Early in the second half, the Cougars defense got a big interception by junior defensive back Rocky Angone (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mt. Carmel) and the offense capitalized using two plays to go 53 yards with Schillo scoring on the second play on a 10-yard rush to put SXU ahead, 20-3. Following a Iowa Wesleyan punt, Saint Xavier marched down the field again on its next possession and, with eight seconds left in the third quarter, Schillo punched it in from seven yards out to complete the game's scoring. SXU (8-2 overall/5-1 MSFA) wraps up their 2005 regular-season slate at home on Saturday, November 12, with a game against MSFA rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. and, prior to the start, all seniors on the 2005 Saint Xavier football roster will be honored.
