Kansas City, Mo. - Head coach Bob Hallberg and the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team have received one of four No. 2 seeds in next week's 2009 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn., when the seedings and pairings for the event were released by the national office Thursday morning. The 32-team, single-elimination tournament is divided into four, eight-team brackets with teams seeded one through eight based off the final NAIA Ratings Poll. The Cougars will face No. 7 seed Langston University (Okla.) in first round action on Wednesday, March 18, with the second overall game of the first round at 10:30 a.m. central time at Oman Arena in Jackson.
Langston comes into the national tournament with a 28-5 overall record and is currently riding a 20-game win streak. The Lady Lions received an automatic bid for this year's NAIA National Tournament by winning the Red River Conference. This will mark their seventh appearance at the national tournament where they own an all-time record of 3-6. Last season, Langston brought a 30-1 record into the national tournament and secured a No. 2 seed. However, the Lady Lions were upset in the second round by No. 6 seed Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.), 78-66, and Trevecca Nazarene went on finish as national runners-up.
Saint Xavier has had an impressive season thus far posting a 25-4 overall record and winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season title with a record of 9-1 as well as the 2009 CCAC Tournament. This marks the seventh straight season that SXU has advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, March 18, and the seventh national appearance for the program since it began under Hallberg in 2000.
