Johnson City, Tenn. - The Saint Xavier University men's track team completed its 2009 indoor track season at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships over the weekend of March 6 and 7 in Johnson City, Tenn. The distance-medley relay (DMR) team, consisting of freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), freshman Andrew Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs), sophomore Evan Lowry (Horton, Mich./Hanover-Horton) and freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) took sixth in their qualifying heat with a time of 10:36.9. Freshman KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) finished sixth in his qualifying heat in the 60-meter dash in 7.13 seconds. "Overall, I am quite satisfied with our performances," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "This group is very young (four freshmen and a sophomore) and I feel that there is nothing but upside to them. I believe that the future bodes brightly for this team in general, but this group in particular."
The Cougars take a couple of weeks off before beginning their outdoor season on Saturday, March 28, at the Viking Olympics hosted by Augustana College (Ill.). The meet is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start in Rock Island, Ill.
