Kissimmee, Fla. - Sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) collected five hits over two games to lead Saint Xavier University to a split in its final pair of softball games Saturday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Cougars (6-6 overall) dropped the first game to NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley University (Pa.), 3-0, but held on to claim a 2-1 victory over NCAA Division II foe Northwood University (Mich.) in game two.
The SXU offense had difficulty getting its offense to click against Saginaw Valley Saturday mustering just five hits and no runs over the seven-inning affair. Paradzinski finished 3-for-3 with three singles and was the only Cougar to finish with multiple hits in the game. Freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) took the loss (2-2) on the mound throwing all six innings and giving up eight hits, three runs (all earned) and three walks with three strikeouts. Saginaw Valley took a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in each of the first two innings and then added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to record the 3-0 victory.
Junior pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was tough for SXU in the day's second game against Northwood. Shearer threw all seven innings and allowed just four hits, one earned run and a walk with two strikeouts. She improves to 3-3 overall with the victory. Northwood took the early lead, 1-0, in the top of the first inning on a RBI single, but the Cougars answered right back in the bottom of the frame when sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) tied the game with a RBI single of her own. Neither team scored again until Kennedy answered the call in the bottom of the seventh with another RBI single to claim the 2-1 win.
Saint Xavier (6-6 overall) returns to action next weekend as part of the Show Me Games in Springfield, Mo. The Cougars play three games on Friday, March 13, opening against William Jewell College (Mo.) at 10 a.m. SXU will wrap up play in the event on Saturday, March 14.
