Kissimmee, Fla. - Following a big day at the plate for sophomore left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), the Saint Xavier University softball team split its two games Friday as part of the 2009 Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Cougars (5-5 overall) dropped a heartbreaker in the first game against NCAA Division II Holy Family University (Pa.) falling 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning after tying the game, 4-4, in the top of the frame. However, SXU bounced back quickly defeating NCAA Division II University of Mary (N.D.), 7-1, in the day's second game. Gryczewski racked up five hits over the two-game stretch and also had two runs scored and a stolen base.
The Cougars got off to a slow start against Holy Family and trailed 4-0 after the first two innings. In the top of the sixth, the SXU offense got rolling again when sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) hit a two-RBI single to cut the deficit in half, 4-2. A pinch-hit, two-run homer by sophomore catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) tied things up in the top of the seventh inning. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers got their first batter on with a single and a throwing error later in the inning brought the runner home for the game-winning run. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss throwing the final five innings in relief of freshman starter Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean). Shearer allowed two hits, an unearned run and two walks with one strikeout.
Game two was a completely different story as the Cougars racked up four runs in the first inning and pulled away for the 7-1 victory. Sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) went 2-for-4 in the game with two runs scored, while freshman pitcher Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Brown was also tough on the mound Friday throwing all seven innings and giving up just six hits, an unearned run and a walk with three strikeouts. She improves to 2-1 overall on the young season.
Saint Xavier (5-5 overall) wraps up its annual spring trip on Saturday, March 7, with a pair of tough morning games. The first puts the Cougars against NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley University (Pa.) at 9 a.m. (eastern), while the second matches SXU up with NCAA Division II foe Northwood University (Mich.) at 11 a.m. (eastern).
