Valparaiso, Ind. - Sophomore Katy Thomson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) recently qualified for the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the marathon at the Valparaiso Half Marathon on April 11 in Valparaiso, Ind. Thomson finished the 13.1-mile course with a time of 1:35:11.8, nearly a full minute under the NAIA women's qualifying "B" standard reporting mark of 1:36:00. Two other Cougar runners participated in the Valparaiso Half Marathon with Thomson, but just missed earning a national qualifying time. Junior Ashley Ahline (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) ran the race in 1:39:51.8, while junior Megan Syring (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) completed the course in 1:44:13.5. All three runners will participate in the Second Annual Palos Bank Southwest Half Marathon in Palos Heights, Ill., on Sunday, May 3, to try and improve their times.
"All three women did a tremendous job training for the half marathon and ran really well," said SXU women's track coach Lisa Ebel. "I am proud of them and look forward to seeing their performances next month at the Palos Half Marathon."
The 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will be held from May 21-23 at Ralph Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Ill. Thomson joins sophomore Annie Godette (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) as the first two national qualifiers for Saint Xavier University from the outdoor season.
