Kissimmee, Fla. - Five fielding errors over the course of back-to-back games translated into a pair of losses for the Saint Xavier University softball team Thursday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Cougars (4-4 overall) dropped the first game of the day to NCAA Division II foe Lewis University (Ill.), 4-2, and then fell again to another NCAA Division II opponent with a 3-1 loss to Edinboro University (Pa.). Sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) was solid over both games at the plate going a combined 3-for-7 with a run scored and a RBI.
In Thursday's game against Lewis, Saint Xavier held a 2-0 lead after three innings of play after RBI singles by freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and sophomore second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg), respectively, in the top of the third. However, two fielding errors and a wild pitch by the Cougars allowed the Flyers to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth and it proved to be all the offensive production needed to claim the 4-2 victory. Junior Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss (2-2) for SXU throwing all six innings and giving up eight hits, four runs (two earned) and a walk with one strikeout.
Edinboro got on the scoreboard first in the day's second game when a throwing error by Saint Xavier brought a run home from third base in the top of the first inning. The Fighting Scots added two more runs in the top of the sixth off a RBI single and a RBI groundout to build a 3-0 advantage. The Cougars got a RBI single by Murphy in the bottom of the frame to narrow the deficit to two runs, 3-1, but it was the only offense they could muster the rest of the way. Freshman Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was tough on the mound despite picking up the loss (1-1) allowing just five hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Saint Xavier (4-4 overall) continues play on Friday, March 6, with a pair of afternoon games. The first pits the Cougars against Holy Family University (Pa.) at 1 p.m. (eastern), while the second matches SXU up with University of Mary (N.D.) at 3 p.m. (eastern).
