Clearwater, Fla. - The Saint Xavier University baseball team swept a split doubleheader on Thursday, March 5, at the 2009 Clearwater Baseball Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. at Tack South Field. The two wins even up the Cougars overall record at 4-4 on their annual southern trip.
In game one, the Cougars avenged yesterday's loss to Cedarville University (Ohio) with a 5-0 victory behind a strong performance on the mound by junior lefthander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher). In his first start of the season, Koehn delivered seven innings of two-hit shutout baseball, while striking out eight and walking none. Offensively, the Cougars were led by junior second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) and senior first baseman Matt Van Mill (Palos Heights, Ill./Bishop McNamara), who both went 2- for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Van Mill provided the Cougars with extra cushion in the sixth inning with a two-run homer to left field.
In game two, the Cougars adhered to their team motto "Finish the Day" by defeating Bethel College (Ind.) by a score of 11-6. Sophomore third baseman Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) got the nod on the mound for the Cougars and delivered the win, pitching five innings of four-run ball (three earned). Offensively, freshman catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) paced the Cougar offense with four hits, while Van Mill continued his hot hitting ways going 3- for-4 with three RBI.
The Cougars will continue play tomorrow (Friday, March 6) in the Clearwater Baseball Invitational. Saint Xavier squares off against Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) in a doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. (eastern) at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Fla.
