Kissimmee, Fla. - Behind a four-hit shutout performance by freshman pitcher Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean), the Saint Xavier University softball team wrapped up play Tuesday with a 6-0 victory over Northwood University (Fla.) as part of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Cougars (4-2 overall) dropped their first game of the day, 5-2, against Walsh University (Ohio) despite a strong outing at the plate for sophomore first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest). Murphy went 2-for-3 in the first game with a double, a run scored and a RBI.

Both teams had a strong first inning in game one against Walsh Tuesday. The Cavaliers had a two-run homer in the top of the first to take an early lead, but SXU answered with a RBI double by Murphy and RBI single by freshman shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) to tie things up, 2-2, in the bottom of the frame. However, the rest of the game's scoring went to Walsh, tacking on two more runs in the top of the sixth and adding an insurance run in the seventh to claim the 5-2 win. Junior pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss (2-1) for Saint Xavier throwing all seven innings and allowing eight hits, five runs (all earned) and a walk with five strikeouts.

In Tuesday's second game against Northwood, Derezinski kept the opposing bats in check allowing just four hits and no walks with a strikeout to improve to 1-1 on the year. Sophomore centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while senior third baseman Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) also went 2-for-4 with three RBI. The Cougars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first two innings and cruised the rest of the way. Friscia hit a two-RBI double in the first inning and followed that with a RBI double in the second.

Saint Xavier (4-2 overall) takes Wednesday off before continuing play at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday, March 5, with a pair of games against NCAA Division II opponents. The Cougars take on Lewis University (Ill.) at 3 p.m. (eastern) and then match up against Edinboro University (Pa.) at 5 p.m. (eastern).
