Daytona Beach, Fla. - Senior lefthander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) threw a one-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters to lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a big 6-0 victory over No. 13 ranked Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) Tuesday evening at Sliwa Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla. Zilis (1-0) was dominant throughout the game allowing just one hit and a walk over the 23 batters he faced. In their first game of the day, the Cougars lost a tough one to No. 15 Cumberland University (Tenn.), 3-2, in the final inning off a three-RBI double with two outs and the bases loaded. With the split, SXU sits at 2-2 overall this season.

In the game against Cumberland, Saint Xavier held a 2-1 lead after six innings of play behind a pinch-hit, two-RBI single by freshman Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) in the top of the sixth inning. However, in the bottom of the seventh, senior rightie Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards) got in a jam after retiring the first two batters and loaded the bases with two outs. Cumberland capitalized with a game-winning two-RBI double down the left field line to capture the 3-2 victory. Kehoe (0-1) threw solid despite the late runs allowing nine hits, four runs (all earned) and a walk with four strikeouts over six-and-two-thirds innings of work. The Cougars were limited to just five hits in the game.

Zilis kept the Embry-Riddle bats in check in Tuesday's second game avenging his team's 8-0 loss to the Eagles Monday. Junior outfielder Tony Testin (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had the hot bat for SXU going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Junior second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Freshman third baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) walked in a run and Testin notched a RBI single to give Saint Xavier a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. A sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) in the third inning extended SXU's lead to 3-0. Testin logged another RBI single in the fourth inning to push the lead to 4-0. A RBI single by Mueller and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) completed the scoring for the Cougars in the sixth inning.

Saint Xavier (2-2 overall) heads down to Clearwater, Fla., for the remainder of the week to participate in the seven-team 2009 Clearwater Baseball Invitational. The Cougars take on Cedarville University (Ohio) in their first game Wednesday at 9 a.m. (eastern) and then follow that with a game against Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) at 11:30 a.m. (eastern).
