CHICAGO - Behind a team-high 18 points by senior guard Amir Resic (Prijedor, Bosnia/East-West/Mather), the No. 4 seeded Saint Xavier University men's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a big 89-60 win over No. 5 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the first round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (16-15 overall) jumped out to an early 15-4 lead and never relinquished it leading by as many as 37 points, 76-39, midway through the second half. SXU rode hot shooting throughout the game connecting on 55 percent (36-for-65) of its shots from the field. USF ends its season at 11-19 overall.
Senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie) also had a nice outing for the Cougars Monday finishing with 14 points and team-best eight rebounds. Freshman point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) put up 15 points, five rebounds and three steals, while sophomore guard Dan Palombizio (Michigan City, Ind./New Buffalo) came off the bench to post 13 points. Senior center Rob Rabenau led the Fighting Saints scoring a game-high 24 points on 11-for-14 shooting from the floor. USF finished the game with 24 turnovers and SXU took complete advantage scoring 32 of its 89 points off the miscues. Leading by 20 points, 43-23, at the half, the Cougars continued to pour it on in the second half shooting 68 percent (19-for-28) from the field, including a blistering 88 percent (7-for-8) from beyond the three-point arc.
Saint Xavier (16-15 overall/4-6 CCAC) now heads to the Gentile Center in Chicago on Thursday, March 5, to take on No. 1 seed and No. 9 ranked Robert Morris College (Ill.) in the CCAC semifinals. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
