CHICAGO - A goal by senior midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) just under three minutes into the second overtime period lifted Saint Xavier University to a thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Judson University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's soccer action Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The game was the conference opener for both teams as SXU improves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play and the Eagles fall to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in the CCAC. Scigalski had a tremendous game for the Cougars finishing with two goals and an assist.
Scigalski scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute when she punched the ball through the lower left corner of the goal off an assist from junior forward Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg). The Cougars built a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute when sophomore midfielder Carey Brown (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) put a shot over the keeper's head off a cross from Scigalski. However, just four minutes later, Judson cut the lead in half when senior midfielder Rebecca O'Donnell found the back of the net off assists from junior forward Christina Thornton and freshman defender Betsy Barthel. With just over 17 minutes remaining in regulation, Thornton tied the game, 2-2, on an unassisted breakaway goal. Following a scoreless first 10-minute overtime period, Scigalski wasted little time in notching the game-winner putting the ball in the lower right corner of the goal from 15 yards out. In her first game back from injury since August 31, SXU junior keeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) was tough finishing with eight saves on the night.
Saint Xavier (3-5-1 overall/1-0 CCAC) continues its conference home stand on Saturday, September 27, with a match-up against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
