Men's Soccer - Sun, Sep. 21, 2008
Springfield, Ill. - Despite leading 2-1 at the halftime intermission, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team gave up three unanswered goals in second half action and dropped its non-conference game with University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS), 4-2, Saturday night in Springfield, Ill. It was the third straight loss for the Cougars, who fall to 2-5 overall on the season, after SXU lost two tough double-overtime contests last week.

Junior forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point) gave Saint Xavier an early 1-0 lead in the game's fifth minute when he scored on a shot to the low far post off an assist from senior midfielder Agustin Herrera (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom). The Prairie Stars tied the game, 1-1, in the 21st minute when freshman defender Michael Waldo scored on a header. Five minutes later, the Cougars took back the lead, 2-1, when sophomore midfielder Arturo Macias (Posen, Ill./Bremen) found the back of the net on a shot set up by a pass from junior defender Seamus Ryan (Alsip, Ill./Mount Carmel).

However, the second half was all University of Illinois-Springfield. In the 55th minute, the Prairie Stars tied the game again on a penalty kick by senior forward Jakub Piotrowski and then took the lead five minutes later on a header by junior sweeper Brian Doellman set up by a free kick from Waldo. Piotrowski added a fourth goal in the 76th minute to put the game away. Senior goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished with four saves for the Cougars.

Saint Xavier (2-5 overall) opens up its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 23, with a home game against Judson University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
