Normal, Ill. - In a field that included teams from six NCAA Division I institutions, the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's cross country team held its own finishing fifth overall out of 25 collegiate teams at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Illinois State University (Ill.) Friday afternoon in Normal, Ill. Junior Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) led the Cougars Friday finishing the 5,000 meter race (5K) in 22nd place out of 232 runners with a time of 19:16.
Closely behind Dentzman were freshman Alyssa Driscoll (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) and junior Amy Poull (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest). Driscoll placed 25th overall with a time of 19:20, while Poull crossed the finish line with a personal-best time of 19:25 for 31st place. Sophomore Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) nabbed 49th place with a time of 19:52. Freshman Jackie Ott (Island Lake, Ill./Marian Catholic Central) claimed 61st place with a time of 20:10 and junior Amanda Janosz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished right behind her in 66th place with a time of 20:20. SXU finished higher in the team standings then three NCAA Division I programs, including Western Illinois University, University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), and Northern Illinois University.
"This is without a doubt our best team performance of the season thus far," said SXU women's cross country/track coach Lisa Ebel. "Amy Poull ran a spectacular race and our freshmen class has played a huge role in our early season success. Based on the times we have recorded this season, we are on pace to have our best season to date."
Saint Xavier heads to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, September 27, to take part in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana College (Ill.). The women's race is scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. start.Click here for women's results at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships
