Men's Cross Country - Mon, Sep. 15, 2008
Peoria, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team travelled to Peoria, Ill., on Friday, September 12, to run in the Bradley University Open among 16 teams and 154 collegiate runners. The Cougars placed sixth within the College Division, which included teams from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA. The College Division was won by North Central College (Ill.), while the University Division was taken by Indiana State University (Ind.). Individually, first place was taken by Nick Hird in a time of 25:18 over the very wet and sloppy 8K (8,000 meters) course. SXU placed a different runner as their top individual for the third consecutive week. The top Cougar runner at the Bradley Open was freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), who placed 40th overall with a time of 27:52. Closely following Hummer was sophomore Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 43rd place in 27:57. He was followed by freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 45th place in 28:02, then freshman Dan Gruzwalski (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) in 52nd in 28:10. The final runner for the Cougars was junior Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 123rd place in 31:49. "Well, this race was a very difficult one to assess," remarked Saint Xavier University men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "The times were slow, however the constant rain made the times slow for the entire field. We are definitely starting to pack more (runners one through were only separated by 18 seconds), and we are still missing four runners due to injuries, so I have to feel that we are becoming closer to where I would expect us to be. This next week will go a long way towards defining this season." The Cougars head to South Bend, Ind., on Friday, September 19, to take part in the National Catholic Collegiate Cross Country Championships hosted by Univeristy of Notre Dame. This meet pits the best among the runners who attend Catholic institutions and will take off at 4 p.m. central time.
