CHICAGO - Despite heavy rains throughout most of the game, a bicycle kick goal by senior forward Cody Felton with 1:11 remaining in double overtime gave visiting Goshen College (Ind.) a 2-1 victory over Saint Xavier University (Ill.) in NAIA men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. It is the second straight double-overtime home loss for the Cougars (2-4 overall), who lost 1-0 to Aquinas College (Mich.) in two extra periods Wednesday afternoon.
SXU led for most of the game taking an early 1-0 lead in the game's 17th minute when freshman defender Daniel Cross (Gravesend, England/Axton Chase) scored on a header off an assist by freshman midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle). However, the Maple Leafs tied the score, 1-1, in the 71st minute when sophomore midfielder Afrah Haile scored an unassisted goal off a deflection. Neither team could find the back of the net for the remainder of regulation as well as the ensuing 10-minute first overtime period, but with 1:11 left to play before the game would have been ruled a tie, Felton notched the game-winning goal over the head of Cougar senior keeper James Kline (Canton, Ohio/Perry). Kline finished the game with 11 saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (2-4 overall) takes a week off before returning to action next Saturday, September 20, with a non-conference road game against University of Illinois-Springfield (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Springfield, Ill.
