CHICAGO - Despite a first-half goal by freshman forward Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Aquinas College (Mich.) Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (1-3-1 overall) had eight shots-on-goal compared to just five by the Saints, but SXU had trouble getting the ball past Aquinas sophomore keeper Mary Lothschutz, who finished with seven saves.
Aquinas notched the game's first goal in the 21st minute of play when sophomore midfielder Teresa Buiocchi found the back of the net on a one-on-one situation with SXU senior goalkeeper Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). An assist from junior forward Becca Underwood set up the Saints' scoring opportunity. The Cougars tied the game, 1-1, in the 30th minute when Jondle broke free down the middle of the field off an assist from sophomore defender Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill./Boylan). However, the Saints notched the eventual game-winning goal in the 37th minute off a breakaway by senior forward Brianna Hill. Jondle recorded four shots on goal for SXU in Tuesday's loss, while Grant finished with three saves in goal.
Saint Xavier (1-3-1 overall) heads to Columbia, Ky., this weekend to take part in the two-day Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) Kelme Classic. The Cougars open with a 7 p.m. match-up Friday night against the No. 4 ranked hosts and then wrap up the event with a 5 p.m. game Saturday against Georgetown College (Ky.).
