Findlay, Ohio - Senior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League Player of the Year and head coach Mike Feminis earned Midwest League Coach of the Year honors as the Saint Xavier University football team landed 16 different players on the MSFA All-Midwest League Team when the honors were released by the league office Monday. SXU had six First Team selections, four Second Team honorees, and six players earning Honorable Mention consideration.
Nowman earned All-MSFA First Team honors as both a wide receiver and a return specialist. He finished the season with 71 catches for 972 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns as a wideout, while returning 24 punts for 355 yards (14.8 yards per return) and two scores. Senior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) also received first team honors breaking every single-season SXU passing record in 2005 with 292 completions for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns over 12 games (294.9 yards per game). Junior Andy Ricca (LaPorte, Ind./Michigan City) was named an All-MSFA First Team wide receiver with Nowman after setting new Saint Xavier records for single-season receptions (100) and receiving yards (1,275) this year.
On the defensive side, senior linebacker Rick King (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) wrapped up an impressive career with 115 tackles (69 solos), including 11.5 tackles for losses and a sack. King also finished his senior season with an interception, four pass break-ups, and six quarterback hurries. Senior defensive tackle Nick Stimac (St. John, Ind./Andrean) also earned All-MSFA First Team honors with 53 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for losses and 2.5 sacks. Junior punter Sean Collins (Niles, Ill./Notre Dame) was a first team selection as well finishing the 2005 campaign with a league-leading 40.9 yards per punt average.
On the All-MSFA Midwest League Second Team, the Cougars had two offensive linemen represented in junior Charlie Russ (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and senior Robert Moore (Merrillville, Ind./Andrean). Two defensive backs also earned second team honors for Saint Xavier with senior free safety Jeremiah Scott (North Chicago, Ill./North Chicago) and sophomore strong safety Mike Wilkinson (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) making the cut.
Honorable mention selections for the Cougars included: sophomore wide receiver Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park), junior wideout Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), freshman defensive end Joe Miller (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech), sophomore defensive lineman Justin Tuffs (Mokena, Ill./Stagg), sophomore linebacker Sean Kenney (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg), and senior linebacker Steve Runyon (Hammond, Ind./Gavit).
Saint Xavier had an impressive 2005 campaign finishing with a 9-3 overall record and as co-champions of the MSFA Midwest League. The Cougars qualified for the NAIA playoffs for only the second time in the program's 13-year history. SXU was ranked No. 7 in the final NAIA football poll, but fell 31-28 to No. 4 University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in first round action in Chicago on Saturday, November 19.
