CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team took part in the Ted Hedstrand Invitational sponsored by North Park College (Ill.) on Saturday, September 6, at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. The Cougars finished third overall in the eight-team field behind nationally ranked NCAA Division III powers University of Chicago (Ill.) and North Central College (Ill.). UC posted 28 points to win the title, folowed by North Central's 38. SXU was next with 88 points, followed by Trinity Christian College (Ill.) with 126, DePaul's "B" team at 132, North Park with 141, Moraine Valley CC at 188 and Blackburn College with 225 points. Pacing the Cougars was freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 11th place overall with a time of 29:19 over the hilly 5.24-mile course. Next for the Cougars was freshman Dan Gruzwalski (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) in 17th place at 29:36, followed by sophomore Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 20th at 29:45, freshman Buck Hill (Streator, Ill./Ottawa-Marquette) in 32nd with a time of 30:14, freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) in 35th at 30:21 and junior Manny Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) in 72nd at 33:59. "Not a bad performance for our guys," remarked Saint Xavier University men's cross country/track coach Ed McAllister. "This was the first time that our guys ran the full collegiate distance ... and then some. This is a tough course. Our team hung very close together. As we gain more experience, our guys are becoming a more cohesive, stronger unit. Our best races lie ahead when our injuries heal and we get to full strength." Next on the Cougar schedule is the Bradley Open, which will be held on Friday, September 12, at Detweiler Park in Peoria, Ill. The men's race is set for a 6 p.m. start.
