CHICAGO - Behind 27 kills and 11 total blocks by freshman middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York), Saint Xavier University notched one win out of its four matches on the weekend as part of the 2008 SXU-IIT Crossover Volleyball Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (3-8 overall) won their opening match Friday against Cornerstone, but dropped their next three falling to Lubbock Christian University (Texas), University of Illinois-Springfield (Ill.) and No. 17 ranked Walsh University (Ohio).
In Friday's first match against Cornerstone, SXU won in three straight games 25-22, 25-17 and 25-19 behind a team-best tying 10 kills by Scudder. Senior outside hitter Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) also finished the match with 10 kills for the Cougars. Defensively, Saint Xavier was led by senior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) with 21 digs. In its second match Friday, SXU struggled offensively and fell to Lubbock Christian University in three games 18-25, 23-25 and 20-25 despite nine kills by Winkler. Guide played solid defensively finishing with 23 digs.
The Cougars won its first game 25-13 in their 9 a.m. match Saturday with University of Illinois-Springfield, but dropped the next three 11-25, 22-25 and 17-25 to lose the match. Scudder and senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) each finished the match with nine kills, while Guide recorded a team-high 20 digs. SXU finished out the tourney with a tough loss to No. 17 Walsh University in three games 16-25, 22-25 and 21-25. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) led the offensive attack with eight kills, while Scudder finished with six kills.
Saint Xavier (3-8 overall/2-0 CCAC) gets back to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate on Tuesday, September 9, with a 7 p.m. road match against Robert Morris College (Ill.) in Chicago.
