CHICAGO - Behind two goals by freshman midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X), the No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team notched its first win of the season Sunday afternoon by defeating visiting Saint Ambrose University (Iowa), 5-1, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago in the second day of the two-day RMC-SXU Invitational. The Cougars (1-2-1 overall) dropped the first game of the event Saturday, a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame College (Ohio) at Redmond Athletic Complex in Bensenville, Ill.
In Saturday's loss, SXU had trouble offensively mustering just six shots on goal in the game all saved by Notre Dame sophomore Emilie LaMarche. The Falcons got the deciding goal in the 68th minute of play when sophomore forward Ashley Rucker got a shot past Saint Xavier senior goalkeeper Kim Pavel (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point). Pavel finished the game with one save and split time with senior Nikki Grant (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), who recorded seven saves over the game's first 49 minutes. Notre Dame had nine shots on goal compared to just six by the Cougars.
Sunday's game was a completely different story as Saint Xavier blasted 12 shots on goal, which led to five goals in a 5-1 victory. Senior forward Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) scored the game's first goal on an unassisted shot that sailed over the head of SAU senior keeper Erica Inendino in the fifth minute of the game. The Queen Bees tied things up, 1-1, in the 56th minute when freshman forward Nikki Boland found the back of the net off an assist from senior forward Shelby Van Gieson.
However, the rest of the game was all Saint Xavier as sophomore midfielder Carey Brown (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) punched in another goal just two minutes later to regain the lead off a pass from freshman defender Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X). Jondle got in on the goal scoring in the 63rd minute when she took passes from Scigalski and Brown to notch her team's third goal of the day. Schueth tacked on the remaining two scores for the Cougars in the 78th and 85th minutes, respectively. Sophomore midfielder Katie DuPree (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) recorded an assist on the first goal by Schueth. Grant played the entire game in goal for SXU and finished with eight saves.
Saint Xavier (1-2-1 overall) continues play at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field on Tuesday, September 9, with a non-conference home game against Aquinas College (Mich.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
