CHICAGO - Two goals and an assist by junior forward Zach Kekelik (Merrillville, Ind./Crown Point) helped lift the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to a commanding 4-0 win over visiting Northland Baptist Bible College (Wis.) Friday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. In addition, senior keeper James Kline (Canton, Ohio/Perry) notched the Cougars' first shutout of the season finishing the game with two saves.
Kekelik got the scoring started for SXU in the game's fifth minute when he received a beautiful assist from Kline for the game's first goal. In the eighth minute of play, the Cougars struck again when freshman midfielder Al Palar (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) found the back of the net off a pass from freshman midfielder Cody Culver (Roscoe, Ill./Harlem). With just over six minutes remaining in the first half, junior forward George Mihai (Chicago, Ill./Garden City CC) got in on the scoring with a goal off an assist by Kekelik. Leading 3-0 at the half, Saint Xavier added an insurance goal in the second half when Kekelik broke free to record his second score of the game on an unassisted breakaway. The Cougars posted 11 shots on goal compared to just two by the Pioneers.
Saint Xavier (2-2 overall) continues its season on Wednesday, September 10, with a non-conference home game against Aquinas College (Mich.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
