Men's Cross Country - Mon, Sep. 1, 2008
Lincolnwood, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team opened its 2008 season at Channel Runn Park in Lincolnwood, Ill., taking part in the DePaul University Opener this past weekend. The Cougars finished fifth in the seven-team field of all NCAA Division I teams in their initial contest. The meet was won by Loyola University (Ill.) with 33 points, followed by University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) with 48 points; DePaul University with 53; University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with 88; SXU with 144; University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at 161 and finally Chicago State University (Ill.) with 220. The leading runner was Loyola's Danny Docherty, who raced to a time of 20:49 over the four-mile course. The first Saint Xavier runner was sophomore Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) in 25th place with a time of 22:02. He was followed by freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 27th place with 22:12, then freshman Dan Gruzwalski (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) in 30th place at 22:17, freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) in 35th place at 22:32, freshman Andy Peters (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Yellow Springs) in 40th with a time of 22:45 and freshman Buck Hill (Streator, Ill./Ottawa Marquette) in 43rd place at 22:54. "I think we had a little bit of first race jitters," commented Saint Xavier University men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "We're pretty injured right now, so we are counting heavily upon our freshmen. The bright part of the race was the fact that we have and continue to run as a solid pack." SXU runs its next competition on Saturday, September 6, when the Cougar harriers take part in the Ted Hedstrand Invitational sponsored by North Park University. The men's 8K (8,000 meters) race is scheduled for a 11 a.m. start.
