Milwaukee, Wis. - Junior Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) provided the team's only offensive score as No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University picked up a loss and a tie over the weekend in women's soccer action at the Cardinal Stritch University Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. The Cougars (0-1-1 overall) dropped its season opener Saturday with Lindenwood University (Mo.), 3-0, and then tied McKendree University (Ill.), 1-1, in their final match of the tourney Sunday.
In the opener Saturday, SXU had plenty of opportunities to score, but all eight of its shots-on-goal turned into saves by Lindenwood senior keeper Kristen Prest. However, the Lions took full advantage of their four shots-on-goal putting three of them in the back of the net. Saint Xavier University junior goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) finished the day with one save. Senior midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) and junior midfielder Cecilia Cline (Chicago, Ill./Ashford University/De La Salle) each finished with two shots-on-goal in the losing effort.
Sunday's match-up against McKendree proved to be a different story as the Cougar offense scored on one of its two shots-on-goal attempts, while the Bearcats were held at bay by 10 saves from Wagner. McKendree scored early in the contest notching the game's first goal in the fourth minute of play when junior forward Sarah Ryan took advantage of an assist from freshman midfielder Sulyn Keomanivane off a corner kick. However, Wagner turned up her defense and stopped the Bearcats' next 10 shots-on-goal. Martinez was able to tie the score in the game's 22nd minute off an assist from sophomore forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont).
Saint Xavier (0-1-1 overall) continues its season this weekend by co-hosting the two-day SXU/Robert Morris Classic. The Cougars will play Notre Dame College (Ohio) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Robert Morris College in Chicago before returning to its home field, Bruce R.
