Men's Soccer - Sun, Aug. 31, 2008
Romeoville, Ill. - A pair of unassisted first-half goals proved to be the difference as the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) Sunday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (0-2 overall) got five saves from junior keeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic), but the offense managed just three shots on goal in the game.
LU notched its first goal of the game in the 23rd minute on a breakaway down the left side of the field by junior midfielder Art Rodriguez. Less than four minutes later, the Flyers built a 2-0 advantage when senior midfielder Cory Mastey took advantage of being in the right place in a crowded box and found the back of the net when the ball was sent his way. SXU got two shots on goal from junior midfielder George Mihai (Chicago, Ill./Garden City CC). The Cougars were outshot, 7-3, on shots on goal in the game.
Saint Xavier (0-2 overall) returns home to take on Cornerstone University (Mich.) on Tuesday, September 2. The home opener is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
