Hammond, Ind. - Behind eight kills and seven digs from senior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team notched its first win of the 2008 season Tuesday night defeating Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in three straight games (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action in Hammond, Ind. Not only did the Cougars get their first victory to improve to 1-5 overall, but they also got their conference slate started on a high note with the league-opening match win.
In addition to Gullickson's solid play, senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) and freshman middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York) each finished the match with five kills and two blocks, while senior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) recorded a team-best 15 digs. Freshmen setters Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) and Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) split the setting duties in Tuesday's victory posting 13 and 11 assists, respectively.
Saint Xavier (1-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) returns to action on Tuesday, September 2, with a conference road match against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The match begins at 7 p.m. at Marquette Catholic High School in Michigan City, Ind.
