Dearborn, Mich. - Despite 37 kills and 10 total blocks by junior outside hitter Stephanie Galas (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team struggled in its season-opening matches as part of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Earlybird Volleyball Tournament in Dearborn, Mich., over the weekend. The Cougars (0-5 overall) failed to pick up a win in their five matches at the event falling to Hastings College (Neb.) and Taylor University (Ind.) Friday night and completing play on Saturday against Bethel College (Ind.), University of Northwestern Ohio, and Notre Dame College (Ohio).
In SXU's first match Friday against Hastings, the team fell behind quickly and had difficulty recovering falling in three straight games 25-14, 25-13, 25-16. Galas finished the match with five kills and seven digs, while senior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) posted five kills as well with two service aces. Saint Xavier played tough in its next match Friday with Taylor University (Ind.). The Cougars dropped the first two games of the match, 25-15 and 25-22; but rallied in the next two winning 25-20 and 25-22. However, Taylor was able to outlast SXU in the end taking the decisive fifth game, 15-9. Senior middle blocker Chelsey Guay (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) led the offensive attack against Taylor finishing the match with 14 kills, while Galas posted 12 kills. Senior libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) scooped up 30 digs for the Cougars.
Saturday proved to be tough competition as well for Saint Xavier as the team dropped its first match to Bethel College (Ind.) in four games 25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 14-25. Guay finished the match with nine kills and seven total blocks for SXU, while freshman middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York) played well posting eight kills and four total blocks. The result was the same against University of Northwestern Ohio in Saturday's second match with the Cougars falling in four games 17-25, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25 despite nine kills and 12 digs apiece from Guay and Gullickson. In its final match of the tournament, SXU played tough in its first game winning a tight one 29-27, but dropped the next three games 25-15, 25-23, 25-18. Guay recorded nine kills, while Galas had six kills and three blocks.
Saint Xavier (0-5 overall) returns to action on Tuesday, August 26, to open up its conference slate against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The match begins at 7 p.m. in Hammond, Ind.
