Edwardsville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's outdoor track team completed its season at the 2008 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Edwardsville, Ill., on May 23-25. SXU had three athletes compete at the event in four overall events. Sophomore John Neisler (Armington, Olympia) ran 2:01 in the 800 meter run, while senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) attempted the rare double of running in the 10000 meter run as well as the marathon. He traversed the 10000 meter run in 32:43 to finish 21st overall and then with just 36 hours rest ran the marathon in 2:37:22 to finish 15th overall in this race. Freshman Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) also competed in the marathon, finishing 23rd in his first ever marathon in 2:42:24. "Overall, I am happy," remarked Cougar men's track coach Ed McAllister. "John was valiantly trying to overcome a virus, so I don't believe that his race truly personified the effort and success that he displayed over this season. It's truly sad when an athlete trains extremely hard only to be felled or, in this case, weakened by circumstances (illness) outside his ability to overcome.
"Bugarin completed his career in fine fashion, with a solid double," continued McAllister. "His marathon was a solid effort over a demanding course. Roy was nothing short of fantastic. His marathon effort marked him as the second fastest freshman nationally at this distance. He learned volumes from this race and I look to continued successes in his future. He is one tough individual."
