Des Moines, Iowa - Freshman leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and had two RBI to help lead No. 3 seed Saint Xavier University to a 4-2 rally win over No. 5 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) Wednesday night in the first elimination game of the 2008 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. The Cougars (27-20 overall) will now face the winner of Thursday morning's No. 4 seed Grand View College (Iowa)/No. 6 William Penn University (Iowa) match-up at 2 p.m. on Thursday. USF ends its 2008 season with a record of 28-21 overall.
The Fighting Saints scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead on SXU. However, a sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) in the bottom of the third cut the USF lead in half, 2-1. A RBI groundout by freshman shortstop Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and a RBI double by Gryczewski plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Cougars a 3-2 advantage. Gryczewski added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on another RBI double to give her team its 4-2 lead. Senior righthander Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the victory (9-9) on the mound for SXU throwing all seven innings and allowing seven hits, two runs (both earned), and a walk with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (27-20 overall) continues region tournament play on Thursday, May 8, with a 2 p.m. game against the winner of Thursday's Grand View/St. Francis (Ill.) match-up. The winner of that game will advance to Thursday's 4 p.m. game, while the loser will have their season ended.
