Men's Track & Field - Wed, May 7, 2008
CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University freshman Roy Witty (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) became the third Cougar to qualify for the 2008 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships by clocking a time of 1:14:30 in the half-marathon (13.1 miles) in the First Annual Palos Bank Southwest Half Marathon on Sunday, May 4, in Palos Heights, Ill. His time surpasses the 1:15.00 qualifying time necssary to participate in the marathon at the 2008 NAIA National Marathon in St Louis, Mo., on May 24. Witty, competing in his first half-marathon, averaged a 5:43 mile pace for the 13+ mile race. He finished 12th overall in a field of 1370 runners. He joins sophomore teammate John Neisler (Armington, Ill./Olympia), who qualified earlier this season in the 800-meter run, and senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington), who will represent SXU in the 10,000-meter run, at this year's NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. "I was extremely impressed with Roy's performance and desire," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "He is just coming back from a bout of pneumonia and this was really the only attempt that Roy could have had. He looked tough right from the beginning and when I saw him at the 10-mile mark, I was pretty confident that he would make the time. It will be tough for him to be ready to run a full marathon in just three weeks, but if anyone can accomplish the feat, Roy can." The Cougars wrap up their outdoor season later this week with the Dr. Keeler "Last Chance" Meet hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill. The two-day meet begins on Thursday, May 8.
