Des Moines, Iowa - Five errors by No. 3 seed Saint Xavier University negated a solid pitching performance by sophomore righthander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and helped lead to a 4-0 loss to No. 6 seed William Penn University (Iowa) in first round action of the 2008 NAIA Region VII Softball Tournament Wednesday morning in Des Moines, Iowa. Shearer threw all seven innings and allowed just five hits, one earned run, and no walks with three strikeouts. The Cougars (26-20 overall) now face the loser of the No. 4 seed Grand View (Iowa)/No. 5 seed St. Francis (Ill.) match-up for the tournament's first elimination game set for 5 p.m. Wednesday.

SXU mustered just three hits in the ballgame with senior catcher Aly Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), junior third baseman Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College), and freshman centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) each recording one. William Penn scored two runs apiece in the top of the fourth and fifth innings for their 4-0 victory. SXU had its chances to get on the scoreboard leaving 10 runners stranded on the base paths in the game thanks in part to five walks allowed by the WPU pitching staff and two errors by the Statesmen defense.

Saint Xavier (26-20 overall) returns to tournament action at 5 p.m. Wednesday facing elimination against the loser of today's Grand View College/University of St. Francis (Ill.) game. The game will take place at the Grand View Softball Field.
