Joliet, Ill. - Sophomore outfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) and sophomore relief pitcher Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) both represented Saint Xavier University on the 2008 NAIA All-Region VII Baseball Team when the team was announced by the regional office Tuesday. In addition, sophomore second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) and sophomore leftfielder Tony Testin (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic) garnered spots on the 2008 NAIA Region VII-Rawlings Gold Glove Team, a nine-player team representing the region's top defensive player for each of the nine positions on a baseball field.
Clements has been a force at the plate this season for the Cougars with team-highs of 70 hits, 57 runs scored, five home runs, and 19 stolen bases. Koehn carries a team-low earned-run average (ERA) of 2.40 and has pitched well as the team's closer with five saves and a win (1-2) on the year. He has 22 strikeouts over 30.0 innings of relief work and allowed just eight earned runs. Mueller has been extremely productive defensively for the Cougars with 110 putouts, 133 assists, and only seven errors for a .972 fielding percentage. Testin had a solid fielding percentage of .971 in left field this season recording 66 putouts, one assist, and only two errors.
Saint Xavier (33-18 overall/15-5 CCAC) has earned the No. 3 seed in this week's 2008 NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 6, at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars take on No. 4 seed William Penn University (Iowa) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Cross Field in the six-team, double-elimination event.
