Joliet, Ill. - Following a second place finish in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) final standings, the Saint Xavier University baseball team landed six of its players on the 2008 All-CCAC Baseball Team when the honors were released by the conference office late last week. Junior pitcher James Williams (Steger, Ill./South Suburban CC/Bloom), sophomore reliever Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), sophomore outfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton), sophomore shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) and sophomore second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) all received first team honors, while junior outfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) garnered honorable mention recognition.
O'Brien leads the team in several offensive categories, including batting average (.387), doubles (15), triples (5), and RBI (56). Clements has also been a force at the plate this season for the Cougars with team-highs of 70 hits, 57 runs scored, five home runs, and 19 stolen bases. Mueller is batting .361 for SXU with 61 hits, 48 runs scored, and 41 RBI. Mueller has also been extremely productive defensively with 110 putouts, 133 assists, and only seven errors for a .972 fielding percentage. Williams has a 6-2 win-loss record over nine starts and 10 appearances on the mound thus far this season. He carries a 3.62 earned-run average (ERA) with 34 strikeouts over 54.2 innings of work. Koehn has a team-low ERA of 2.40 and has pitched well as the team's closer with five saves and a win (1-2) on the year. He has 22 strikeouts over 30.0 innings of relief work and allowed just eight earned runs. Skelly has hit .275 this spring with 50 hits, 48 runs scored, and 30 RBI.
Saint Xavier (33-18 overall/15-5 CCAC) has earned the No. 3 seed in this week's 2008 NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 6, at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars will take on No. 4 seed William Penn University (Iowa) at 7 p.m. at Silver Cross Field in the six-team, double-elimination event.
