Hillsdale, Mich. - Using a relay team comprised of three freshmen and one sophomore, the Saint Xavier University women's outdoor track team qualified for the 2008 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships Friday in the 4x800 meter relay by securing a time of 9:43.94 at the 42nd Annual Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College (Mich.) in Hillsdale, Mich. The NAIA qualifying time for this event was 9:44.00. The 28th Annual NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will take place from May 22-24 at Ralph Korte Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.
Freshman Jade Braden (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) ran the first leg of the relay for the Cougars. Freshman Kayla Gilbert (Country Club Hills, Ill./Shepard) and sophomore Lauren Dentzman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) ran second and third, respectively. Anchoring the relay was freshman Dana Eppley (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard). It is the first time the SXU outdoor women's track team has qualified in the 4x800 meter relay in the program's two-year history.
"We have a whole month to prepare for nationals, so I am looking forward to seeing how this group improves," said SXU women's outdoor track coach Lisa Ebel. "This team has been a pleasure to work with over these last few months and I'm excited to see them rewarded with a trip to Nationals to end their season."
The NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships will take place in St. Louis, Mo., from May 22-24 with the 4x800 relay trials scheduled for Thursday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. and the finals set for Friday, May 23, at 6 p.m.Click here for results from the Hillsdale College Gina Relays
