CHICAGO - Led by dominating pitching performances by sophomore Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and senior sister Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), the Saint Xavier University softball team gave up just one run over four Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) games on the weekend and finished third overall in the final conference standings with a 12-6 mark. The Cougars (23-17 overall/12-6 CCAC) swept a doubleheader from Robert Morris College (Ill.) Friday in Bensenville, Ill., winning game one, 6-1, and the nightcap, 9-0. SXU then beat Trinity Christian College (Ill.), 11-0 and 15-0, Saturday afternoon at SXU Softball Field to wrap up its 2008 regular season.

Led by a double and two RBI by freshman first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), Saint Xavier scored five unanswered runs in the first four innings to roll to a 6-1 victory in game one against the Eagles. Jalyn Shearer threw all seven innings and allowed seven hits, one run (unearned), and two walks with five strikeouts. She improved to 12-6 overall with the win. Freshman leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had a nice game at the plate going 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. Ashley Shearer kept RMC in check offensively in game two allowing just two hits and two walks over five innings for the 9-0 shutout victory. She moved to 6-8 overall following the win. Freshman centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) provided the offensive lift for SXU going 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Freshman shortstop Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) also played well with a triple and three runs scored.

Murphy, Gryczewski, and senior catcher Aly Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) each had three hits and two runs scored to lead SXU to an 11-0 victory in six innings against Trinity Christian Saturday. Kelley also finished with a team-best three RBI in the winning effort, while Murphy and Gryczewski each tallied two RBI. Jalyn Shearer notched the win (13-6) and pitched the first five innings giving up just three hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Senior Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) threw the final inning and gave up one hit with two strikeouts. Led by eight runs in the first inning, the Cougars cruised to a 15-0 win in the second game behind a team-best four RBI by freshman centerfielder Amanda Rimkus (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville). Ashley Shearer had another solid outing allowing just two hits and two walks for her second shutout of the weekend and fourth of the season. She finished the game with five strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (23-17 overall/12-6 CCAC) awaits its pairing for the 2008 CCAC Softball Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, April 30, at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars will take the No. 3 seed into this week's tourney.
