CHICAGO - Led by a big offensive weekend by sophomore shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), the Saint Xavier University baseball team won three of its four weekend games and finished in second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with a 15-5 mark. The Cougars (33-18 overall/15-5 CCAC) split a Saturday road doubleheader with Judson University (Ill.) dropping game one, 6-5, but bouncing back to take the nightcap, 6-1. On Sunday afternoon, SXU swept two games from Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago winning the first game, 10-1, and the second, 10-5.

In the first game Saturday, Saint Xavier got two hits, a run scored, and a RBI apiece from O'Brien and sophomore designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic), but failed to score in the final two innings and lost by a run, 6-5. Junior righthander Bryant Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) threw the first four innings allowing six hits, four runs (two earned), and a walk with one strikeout. Sophomore leftie Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the loss (1-2) in relief pitching the final two innings and giving up four hits, two runs (both earned), and two walks with no strikeouts.

In Saturday's second game, the Cougars took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed en route to a 6-1 victory. O'Brien had the hot bat for SXU going a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI. Sophomore leftfielder Tony Testin (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Siefert finished 1-for-2 with two RBI. Junior righthander Dan Miller (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) was tough on the mound throwing all seven innings and allowing just three hits, a run (unearned), and a walk with two strikeouts. Miller improves to 6-3 on the season with the victory.

Sunday's doubleheader against Cardinal Stritch started off well for Saint Xavier as game one went smoothly for a 10-1 win. Sophomore second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI, while freshman third baseman Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) notched a big three-RBI double in the fifth inning. Testin finished with a team-high two hits and two runs scored to help lead the SXU offense. Junior rightie James Williams (Steger, Ill./South Suburban CC/Bloom) earned the win (6-2) on the mound throwing all seven innings and giving up five hits, one run (unearned), and two walks with five strikeouts. A grand slam by O'Brien in the sixth inning of game two put the exclamation point on the big weekend as SXU came out with the 10-5 win. Mueller was a single away from hitting for the cycle in game two going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and homer with two RBI. Freshman righthander Jeff Dobie (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) picked up the victory (5-2) going four-and-a-third innings and allowing four hits, two runs (one earned), and a walk with four strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (33-18 overall/15-5 CCAC) has earned second place in the final CCAC standings and will not have to play in this week's CCAC Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 1. The Cougars will look to schedule a series with a local team later this week in preparation for the following week's NAIA Region VII Baseball Tournament.
