Somers, Wis. - Behind two shutout performances on the mound by sophomore righthander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) and senior rightie Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic), the Saint Xavier University softball team swept a doubleheader from NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside (Wis.) Thursday afternoon in Somers, Wis. The Cougars (19-17 overall) took the first game, 1-0, and then kept the Rangers' bats in check in the nightcap with a 2-0 victory. Freshman shortstop Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) hit her second home run of the season and provided all of the SXU offense in the 1-0 win.

Shearer threw all seven innings of the first game and was stellar allowing just two hits and a walk with two strikeouts for her fifth shutout of the year. She improves to 11-6 overall this season with the victory. Hannigan went 1-for-2 at the plate with the solo homer. Freshman outfielders Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and Rachel Krabbe (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) each finished with a hit in the game as well to account for SXU's three hits. The second game was more of the same as Bartels limited the Rangers to six hits and no walks with two strikeouts for her first shutout win of the year. She moves to 3-3 on the season with the victory. Senior catcher Aly Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) had a team-best two hits and a RBI, while freshman first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had a hit and a RBI. Gryczewski and Krabbe each scored a run toward the winning effort.

Saint Xavier (19-17 overall/8-6 CCAC) gets back to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule with a road doubleheader on Friday, April 25, against Robert Morris College (Ill.). The twinbill is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Bensenville, Ill.
