CHICAGO - A RBI infield single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth by sophomore second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) plated sophomore rightfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) from second and gave Saint Xavier University a wild 7-6 victory over visiting Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Wednesday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (29-17 overall/11-4 CCAC) led 6-0 heading into the seventh inning before the Tigers scored six unanswered runs over the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game, 6-6, heading into the final frame.

Mueller finished the game with a team-best three hits and also posted two runs scored and two RBI, while Clements went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Freshman first baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) had a big two-RBI single in the sixth inning that gave Saint Xavier its fifth and sixth runs of the game. Junior righthander James Williams (Steger, Ill./South Suburban CC/Bloom) started off well on the mound allowing just three hits and no runs or walks through the first six innings. However, in the top of the seventh, two base hits and a walk by Olivet loaded the bases with no outs. After a sacrifice fly and a shallow fly-out to left field, Williams loaded the bases again on a walk and sophomore leftie Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) came in to relieve him. Unfortunately for the Cougars, a three-RBI double and a RBI single capped a five-run inning for the Tigers and cut the big lead to a run, 6-5.

SXU left a man stranded at third in the bottom of the seventh and ONU was able to tie the game in the top of the eighth on a RBI fielder's choice by senior designated hitter Chris Parmley. The Cougars got a 4-6-3 double play to end the top of the ninth for Olivet and Clements got a one-out walk and immediately stole second to put himself in position for his late-game heroics. With two outs in the inning, Mueller hit a shallow pop-up between the pitcher's mound and first base that fell to the ground with no one covering first base and Clements never hesitated rounding third base to score the game-winner.

Saint Xavier (29-17 overall/11-4 CCAC) heads to Joliet, Ill., on Thursday, April 24, to play a night game against league-leading and No. 13 ranked University of St. Francis (Ill.) at Silver Cross Field. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Joliet.
