Romeoville, Ill. - A grand slam by freshman centerfielder Amanda Rimkus (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) in the fifth inning of game two helped give the Saint Xavier University softball team an 8-1 advantage, which eventually led to a 10-8 victory over No. 7 ranked NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) Tuesday night at Lewis Softball Field in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (17-17 overall) had difficulty generating offense in the first game recording just four hits in a 5-1 loss to the Flyers. Senior catcher Aly Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and sophomore second baseman Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) also hit home runs, both solo shots, for SXU in the game two victory Tuesday.
Ruettiger provided Saint Xavier's only run production in the first game of the doubleheader when she hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to two runs, 3-1. However, Lewis tacked on two more runs, one in the third and another in the sixth, to capture the 5-1 victory. Senior righthander Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss on the mound for the Cougars pitching all six innings and allowing 11 hits, five runs (four earned), and four walks with two strikeouts. She falls to 5-8 overall on the season.
The bats came alive for SXU in game two with the team posting 10 hits for 10 runs, including three homers. The Cougars built a 8-1 lead, highlighted by a six-run fifth inning, but the Flyers fought back scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the sixth inning to trail 10-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Lewis made things interesting scoring four runs in the inning and leaving the bases loaded on the final out. Sophomore Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) notched the victory pitching all seven innings and giving up 12 hits, eight runs (all earned), and four walks with five strikeouts. She improves to 10-6 overall this year. Kelley and Ruettiger each finished the game with two hits and two RBI.
Saint Xavier (17-17 overall/8-6 CCAC) returns to action on Thursday, April 24, with a road doubleheader against NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside (Wis.). The twinbill is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Parkside, Wis.
