CHICAGO - Sophomore designated hitter Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) rang up four of Saint Xavier University's 17 total hits as the Cougars rolled to a 15-3 victory over NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) in non-conference baseball action Thursday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU (22-16 overall/4-3 CCAC) pulled away from the Flyers with six runs in the fourth inning to build an 11-1 advantage and then ended the game in the seventh inning due to its 10+-run lead. It is the fourth straight game that the Cougars have posted at least 10 runs on the scoreboard.
Siefert also finished with a double, two runs scored, and three RBI in the ballgame, while sophomore shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) went a perfect 3-for-3 and just missed hitting for the cycle with a single, a double, and a triple. In addition, O'Brien finished with three runs scored and three RBI. Some other sophomore standouts from Thursday's big win included second baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) with two hits, two runs scored, and three RBI as well as rightfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) with two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.
The Cougars threw four different pitchers in the ballgame with freshman righthander Jeff Dobie (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) earning the victory throwing two innings of middle relief and allowing no hits or runs with a walk and a strikeout. Dobie improves to 3-2 overall this season. Junior rightie Bryant Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) got the start and threw two innings as well giving up just two hits, one run (earned), and a walk with one strikeout, while senior righthander Joe Zotto (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) pitched the fifth and sixth innings and allowed just one hit.
Saint Xavier (22-16 overall/4-3 CCAC) heads to Bensenville, Ill., on Friday, April 18, to take on CCAC foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) in doubleheader action. The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
