CHICAGO - Freshman leftfielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) went 3-for-6 at the plate and had three runs scored to help lead Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader split against University of St. Francis (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) softball action Wednesday at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (12-14 overall/8-6 CCAC) dropped the first game, 4-3, but rallied in the nightcap overcoming a early 3-0 deficit to pick up the 4-3 victory. SXU took advantage of some miscues by the Fighting Saints scoring two runs off of passed balls and another run off a wild pitch.
Another freshman who stepped up big for Saint Xavier was shortstop Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg). Hannigan went 4-for-6 over the two-game stretch and also scored two runs for the Cougars. Freshman first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) posted two hits and drove home two RBI in the doubleheader. In the first game, sophomore righthander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss throwing all seven innings and allowing five hits, four runs (two earned), and four walks with two strikeouts. She falls to 7-6 on the season with the loss. Senior rightie Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the win in game two pitching all seven innings and giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned), and no walks with four strikeouts. She improves to 2-6 this year with the victory.
The first game went back-and-forth with USF striking first in the top of the first inning with a run off a RBI single. A bases-loaded walk and a RBI groundout plated two runs for SXU in the bottom of the third, but the Fighting Saints answered with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. A RBI double by junior third baseman Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College) tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth. However, St. Francis got a RBI single in the seventh to win the game, 4-3. The Fighting Saints carried the offensive momentum into the nightcap and took a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. However, SXU scored four unanswered runs the rest of the way to rally for the 4-3 victory. A RBI double by Murphy in the bottom of the fifth inning provided the go-ahead run. Sadly for the Cougars, freshman centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) had her school record 23-game hit streak come to an end in game two of the doubleheader.
Saint Xavier (12-14 overall/8-6 CCAC) heads to Bensenville, Ill., on Thursday, April 10, to take on CCAC foe Robert Morris College (Ill.). The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
