Men's Track & Field - Mon, Apr. 9, 2007
Valparaiso, Ind. - Junior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) finished fourth in a field of 260 runners at the Valpo Mini-Marathon in Valparaiso, Ind., on Sunday, April 8. His time of 1:15.15 over the 13.1-mile course easily met the qualifying standard for the marathon (1:17.40) at the 2007 NAIA National Outdoor Track Championships in Fresno, Calif., on May 24-26. This was the second year that Bugarin has qualified to run at the national meet having qualified in the 10000-meter run during the 2006 campaign.
"I strongly feel that Steven could have run faster today, however the only concern was in his making the qualifying standard," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "Saving his legs for another day was of paramount importance, since I feel that Steven can and will run well in the marathon. The farther that he goes, the stronger runner he becomes."
