Romeoville, Ill. - Sophomore first baseman Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI to help lead Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of NCAA Division II foe Lewis University (Ill.) in collegiate baseball action Wednesday at Brennan Field in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (14-13 overall/1-2 CCAC) scored a run in the top of the fifth inning of game one to earn a 3-2 victory and then racked up 14 hits in the nightcap to win, 12-3.

Junior righthander James Williams (Steger, Ill./South Suburban CC/Bloom) kept the Flyers' bats in check for most of game one allowing just two hits, two runs (earned), and four walks with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Sophomore leftie Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) threw a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout to notch his fourth save of the season for SXU. Lewis got a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead, but the Cougars responded in the top of the second and tied the game on a RBI single by freshman third baseman Austin Lehmann (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) and a walk with the bases loaded by sophomore leftfielder Tony Testin (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Catholic). In the fifth inning, sophomore shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) hit a two-out double to left-centerfield and Siefert capitalized in the next at-bat with a RBI single for the eventual game-winning run.

Lewis scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead on Saint Xavier, but the SXU offense answered with 12 unanswered runs over the next five innings to take the 12-3 victory. Junior centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) led the barrage with three hits, two runs scored, and three RBI. Sophomore rightfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) had a big second game as well hitting a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning and finishing the game with two hits, three runs scored, and three RBI. Freshman rightie Joe Branigan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) got the start on the mound for the Cougars and threw well giving up just three hits, three runs (one earned), and four walks with one strikeout over four innings. Senior righthander Joe Zotto (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) pitched the final three innings and allowed five hits, no runs, and a walk with two strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (14-13 overall/1-2 CCAC) returns home to take on NAIA foe St. Ambrose University on Thursday, April 3, for a non-conference doubleheader. The twinbill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
