Bourbonnais, Ill. - Falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings, the Saint Xavier University baseball team had trouble getting its offense and pitching to click and fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 9-0, late Wednesday afternoon at Watson Field in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars (8-12 overall/0-2 CCAC) managed just five hits in the nine-inning game and have now opened the conference slate with an 0-2 mark.
Sophomore rightfielder Zach Clements (Berwyn, Ill./Morton) recorded SXU's only extra-base hit of the game with a double down the right field line in the top of the third inning. The Cougars missed a golden opportunity to cut into the ONU lead in the top of the fourth with bases loaded and one out. However, a strikeout and flyout to centerfield kept all three SXU runners on the base paths. The Cougar pitching staff gave up 12 hits, three walks, and nine earned runs to the Tigers Wednesday.
Saint Xavier (8-12 overall/0-2 CCAC) takes a break from its conference slate to take on Aquinas College (Mich.) for a four-game weekend home series. The Cougars will open up the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU will wrap up the series with a 12 p.m. twinbill Sunday.
