Elgin, Ill. - Despite two hits, two runs scored, and a RBI by freshman centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster), the Saint Xavier University softball team did not start its Easter weekend on a good note dropping a Thursday doubleheader to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Judson University (Ill.) in Elgin, Ill., and then cancelling a pair of weekend home games due to poor field conditions. The Cougars (4-10 overall/0-2 CCAC) lost the first game to Judson, 4-1, and then dropped the nightcap, 9-5, to open their conference schedule with an 0-2 mark.
In the first game Thursday, SXU got an early run in the first inning when Paradzinski scored from third base on a passed ball. The Eagles tied the game, 1-1, on a RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately, the Cougars managed just three hits and no runs over the final six innings and Judson capitalized with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to claim the 4-1 win. Sophomore Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss on the mound pitching all six innings and allowing nine hits, four runs (three earned), and five walks with four strikeouts.
Seven runs in the second inning of game two gave Judson University an early 7-0 lead and eventually led to a 9-5 loss for Saint Xavier. Freshman first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) led SXU at the plate with two hits, including a double. Junior third baseman Gianna Pavone (Orland Park, Ill./St. Joseph's College) also had a good showing offensively going 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI. However, as a team, the Cougars finished with just five hits and it was not enough to overcome the early deficit. Senior Ashley Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the loss throwing all six innings and giving up 16 hits, nine runs (all earned), and no walks with two strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (4-10 overall/0-2 CCAC) hopes to open its home slate on Tuesday, March 25, after being forced to cancel two scheduled home games over the weekend. The Cougars will host CCAC foe Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) Tuesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago.
